Hackney Diamonds - OB Vision Tech

Fullwell 73 took me on as a trainee Outside Broadcast (OB) vision technician for the press release of Hackney Diamonds. This was a prime opportunity to polish my vision tech skills on a high production value live event. The pressure of this event was much higher than usual due to the client being high-profile.

My main job was to set up, link and sync all monitors for various departments to the OB truck ensuring a reliable signal. During the live broadcast, I was on standby to run and fix any hardware problems that may disrupt the signal path from the cameras to OB.  I also assisted with the general setup and pack-down of the truck and all cables.

This opportunity lead to a job offer to work as a sound trainee on the next Bridget Jones film.

We attached this film with high quality scans of most of the photos and articles we obtained while making this doc. All of these resources have been put into a website which honours his story through film, photography and writing in a web-archive.

Watching Over Her - Documentary

A 12-minute historical documentary about an MI6 spy. I shot this half in the UK and half in Estonia interviewing a range of people and including many mediums of visual media to tell the story of Venda Liivet. The team I put together for this were essential to its creation. We had a very limited time frame to produce this but with our incredible editor Andrew Dean and technical wonder Pola Samotyj we managed to make a piece we are all proud of.

Growing Up In The Green Belt

This project was a self-funded docu-series about young creatives growing up in the greenbelt of London and how they create with the limited resources available outside of the city.

This project lost momentum during the 2nd lockdown but the first two episodes were completed in late 2020 with Editor Andrew Dean and Assistant Theo Samotyj.

Comedy shorts

Towards the end of my first year at LSA, I and a few others challenged ourselves to film and edit a short film based on a random word all in one day. We did this successfully 3 days in a row and the results aren't the peak of cinematic experience but I feel like they showcase the skill we can output under pressure and restraint.

I did all of the camera operation for all 3 clips using a Sony NX-200.

Most of these follow certain genre cliches such as reality TV and mocumentary.

Soap Opera - North Enders

One of our projects in my pathway (Camera & Sound) was to work on a multi-camera scripted drama piece. This involved me being the camera operator on one of the Sony FX9 cameras working in conjunction with the rest of my class filling in various roles on a film set.

The video is a rough cut edited by myself, I was operating Camera C which is the mid-shot from the right.

Podcast

One of the sound projects I completed was a Podcast on an inspirational woman. I worked with one other person interviewing Mickela Hall-Ramsey who is currently the chair of the London Youth Games.

This project required us to research, network, present, record, mix and edit ourselves to create a polished final product.

Sound Mix

This project was a deep dive into the technical skills required to work with sound. We practised sound recording and mixing to great depth.

In this project, we were given a short animation with no sound and had to record and edit everything from scratch in the space of a few days.

I found this enjoyable and feel confident as a sound operator for any kind of project.Sound editing was a skill I had minimal experience with prior so I found this incredibly useful.

Twisted Sep 2021

Similar to live TV mixing I worked on a theatre production in September as the stream technician and live mixer. This entailed setting up cameras and connecting them to a streaming room hidden in the theatre. Due to the pandemic, it was important to the theatre company that they were able to sell online tickets to the show.

For this production, I learnt how to use OBS softwares and the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro switchboard. Learning to respond to technical issues while a show was live was a very formative experience for me in terms of my technician skills. It wasn't completely smooth sailing every night and we seemed to have a new issue every other hour but in the end, the ticketholders were entertained and the show went on!

A section of the live stream is still available here - https://youtu.be/Cr4mQBdKzJ8
